「市民ライター」を名乗ってはいるものの、今私は東和どころか岩手どころか日本にもおらず、、ロンドンに留学に来ています。

約半年前の8月から2025年の夏まで、2年間英国に滞在する予定です！

ロンドンでの生活も新鮮で学ぶことも多いですが、当然日本と生活スタイルや文化は全く異なるため、日本が恋しくなることもしばしば、、

中でも、やっぱり私の愛する東和町が離れてしまったのはとっても切ない。

特に、東和のこんなところが恋しい!というのを徒然なるままに綴ってみました。

Hello, I’m a writer Miki. I used to live in Iwate prefecture in Japan, and now I live in London to study at a university. I’m planning to stay in UK until summer in 2025.

Though I’m enjoying my totally new life in London, I really miss Iwate in the bottom of my heart, especially the town of Towa, which is my favorite rural town covered with mountains and abundant nature.

Here is why I’m so much missing Towa.

 

 

1.食べ物(Food)

東和に行った時に毎回のように食べていたお米、味噌、漬物、わらびのおひたし。農旅セットでも届けてもらったりんご、米粉麺、お酒、佐々長のつゆー。岩手で、日本で当たり前だった私の大好きな東和ご飯が、もうしばらくは食べられない。

イギリスのご飯も悪くない。でも、私の今の体は、切実に東和という名の栄養を欲している。

日本に帰ったら、まず小田家のお米を和さんのピーマン味噌でお腹いっぱい食べたい。

あのあったかくて心に沁みるご飯は当たり前じゃなくて、東和でしか食べられないかけがえのないもの。初めて日本から離れて暮らして、東和の、日本の農家さんがいかにありがたい存在かを改めて実感します。

First and foremost, food!! When I visited Towa, I always enjoyed locally produced rice, miso, pickled vegetables, wild vegetables, noodles, Japanese sake and so on,,,

But in London, Japanese rice, miso or other ingredients are not easily available. In such environment, how can I reach Towa-made food?? Unfortunately, nope for now.

Though I also like British style meals, food made by farmers in Towa is my utmost pleasure and nourishment. I’m so eager to fill my stomach with organic rice and miso made in Towa.

Living outside Japan for the first time, I’ve learned how great Towa, and Japanese farmers are, and realized Japanese food which I had every day was not a matter of course.

 

2.棚田の風景 (Scenery of terraced paddy field)

    ロンドン郊外に出る時に電車で眺める自然も綺麗ですが、山が全然ありません！どこまでいっても平坦な中に、牛や馬や羊がぽつぽつ、、、。

　Though I love the scenery of the nature in countryside areas of England, it doesn’t have any hills or mountains. Husbandry animals, like cows, sheep and horses are scattered in a vast plain field, which is an ordinary landscape in UK.

　　

     東和の棚田の風景は、当たり前かもしれませんがイギリスでは見ることはできません。

　あの東和の砂子の棚田は、今年も黄金色に輝いているだろうか？東和棚田ランの仲間たちは、今年ものんびり棚田を駆け抜けているのだろうか。

イギリスに来たばかりだった昨年9月は、そんな思いを東和の棚田に馳せていました。

     In contrast, Towa is located in a hilly area, and well-known for beautiful terraced paddy field.

   In September, we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of golden rice which is waiting for being harvested. A marathon event organized by local people is also held annually.

   ‘Oh,, what are people in Towa doing now?? I wish I could enjoy the landscape of golden rice field and handmade local food with them,,,’’

  Last September, just one month after I started a life in UK, I was deeply thinking about Towa, because I always visited Towa in September every year to see the paddy field and interact with local people.

 

3.温泉(Hot spring)

　今私が住んでる学生寮には、狭いスペースの立ちシャワーしかありません！しかも硬水。まあ、これが普通の英国スタイルです。

　でも、冬は時に岩手に匹敵するほど寒い。そんな時、東和温泉でぬぐだまって風呂上がりに牛乳でも飲めればなあ、、

　The flat where I currently live only has a shower in a tiny space!!

    Yeah, I know that’s the way of living here in UK, but how it would be wonderful if I could relax at Towa hot spring on cold days in winter…

４．東和町民の方々(local people in Towa)

「まんずねまって、ぬぐだまっでけ」

「白菜持ってって」

初対面の私にも、まるで久しぶりに田舎に帰った家族を包み込むような暖かさで迎えてくれた東和のみんな。元気にしてるかなあ、、。

イギリスの人々も優しいけれど、ロンドンはそりゃあ大都市です。隣の住民に「まあまあ」と庭でとれた野菜や作りすぎたおかずをお裾分けするような、あの東和のような心遣いは中々お目にかかれません。

一人で学生寮の部屋でスーパーで買ってきたサラダをつまんでるとき、ふと「みんなは元気かな」と東和のみんなが恋しくなります。

I still remember locals in Towa warmly welcomed me when I firstly visited Towa 6 years ago as if I were their family member,,, I hope they are doing well.

Though I know Londoners are also kind, there is no such connectedness like a small village, as London is obviously an huge metropolitan city!!

When I nibble on a bowl of salad I buy at a London supermarket, I sometimes reflect on how warmhearted Towa locals were,,, since they often shared fresh vegetables which were harvested in their home gardens.

 

遠く離れていても、みんなは私のことをちゃんと覚えてくれている。

1/18に開催したまきまき花巻オンライン講座。なんと、ロンドンにいるのに私もちゃっかり呼んでもらっちゃいました。

東和からは、私が大ファンの髙橋典人さん！絶対、帰ったら米粉のザ！東和ピザを食べにいきます。

ぶどう農家の寛太さん、高校生の照井さんも花巻への地元愛を披露。お互いに地元愛を語っていたら、あっという間にお約束の2時間が。

離れているのに、こんな形で繋がりあえる。花巻愛という共通項がなければ実現しないこの会は、どこでもできる当たり前のものではない。

Though I live so far away from Towa, everyone still remembers me.

Surprisingly, I was invited to an online gathering of this Makimaki-Hanamaki writers on 18th January, the theme of which was ‘local love for Hanamaki’!!

We had Norihito Takahashi as a guest from Towa. I firmly promise I would eat a Towa pizza he cooks immediately after I come back to Japan.

We also had Kanta, a local grape farmer, and Kana, a local high school student. Having enjoyed the conversations with them, two hours went by surprisingly fast.

This close community is obviously not a matter of course, given that we were not able to connect with each other unless shared ‘love for Hanamaki’.

 

また絶対呼んでね〜

I’m waiting for the next meetup!!

 

 

海と大陸の向こうにいても、心はずっと東和町民。

すぐけえるから！それまでみんな、元気で待っててね。

Even though I now live beyond the sea and 

continents, my heart is always with Towa.

Please welcome me again when I go back two years later!!

 

*I sincerely hope more people get to know ‘Hanamaki’ and ‘Towa’ through this article!
